Fresh water crisis in Bandarban

As a result of the summer heat, there is a freshwater shortage throughout the mountains. Rivers and springs are the main source of water for the people living in the marginal inaccessible hills of Bandarban district. But during the dry season, water from the springs dries up and there is an acute shortage of fresh water in remote areas. Due to the hilly area and the lowering of the groundwater level, this situation has arisen. Even drinking water is not equal to drinking water. In the heat of summer, the mountain streams, springs, and streams have already dried up. Moreover, the residents of those areas are already suffering from various water-borne diseases by drinking contaminated water. The people there have to collect water from far and wide and use it for cooking and drinking. As a result, the suffering of the people living in the mountains has increased manifold.

Headman Para UP member Reda Mong Marma said water is now almost non-existent as a result of stone clearing. There is a shortage of water for drinking and bathing. In the evening, the line for waterfalls. Moreover, even if tubewell are given from NGOs or various institutions, they have become useless later. In this regard, Anupam Dey, Executive Engineer of the District Public Health Engineering Department, said that two projects have been undertaken with the funding of ADB to solve the problem of fresh water in the inaccessible hills of Bandarban. He expressed hope that the project will be implemented to solve the water crisis if approved. Forest and nature experts say that due to climate change, the amount of rainfall in the hills has also been reduced by almost half. Forests are being destroyed freely. Due to these reasons, natural reservoirs and sources of mountain water are closing day by day. Which is affecting the public health of hill tribes.

Residents of remote areas say that acute water shortage is increasing day by day. The diversity of mountains is now under threat due to natural disasters. Hills are now turning into deserts due to deforestation, hill cutting, and stone quarrying. Moreover, these criminal activities are being carried out by highly influential people. If those activities are not stopped, there will be a death march due to wailing for water. They complain that due to the absence of large trees and deforestation, this water crisis is becoming acute.
